Forests of this Bokaro region are spread over the eastern part of the Hazaribagh plateau and lie mainly on its undulating slopes. The topography is hilly with occasional tracts of flat plateau and valleys. The forests ofthe region comprise a mix of vegetation types, including tropical dry deciduous forests, mixed forests, and scrub forests.
The forest density varies from less than 0.4 in open forests to 0.8 in dense forests. The dominant tree species include Sal (Shorea robusta), Mahua (Madhuca longifolia), Tendu (Diospyros melanoxylon), Palash (Butea monosperma), and Bamboo (Bambusa sps). These species form the upper canopy and provide shade and habitat for a variety of plants and animals. The forests in each division are managed scientifically by organising them in to different working circles namely Coppice Working Circle, Selection cum Improvement Working Circle, Plantation Working Circle, Rehabilitation Working Circle, Protection Working Circle, Bamboo Overlapping Working Circle etc, based on the type, density and quality of the forests and silvicultural requirement through a 10 year working Plans. Based on the prescriptions made in working plans, plantations, Sivicultural Works, Soil and Water Conservation works etc are carried out by the funds allocated in State Plan, CAMPA, Wildlife Management Plans, etc regularly every year and efforts are made to improve the quality and quantity of forests.
Similarly the frontline staff under the co-ordination and leadership of the Divisional Forest Officer in each division enforce the Forest Laws and Wild Life Law strictly to protect the forest and forest lands from illicit felling and encroachment, take effective steps to prevent and control forest fires, and involve local people in managing the forests through JFM mechanism. As per the provision of FRA, each forest Division facilitates the awarding of individual and community rights to the Scheduled tribes and other forest dwelling communities on the forest lands occupied by them prior to the year 2005, as per the provisions.
